Hemp - What you should know about this ancient skincare ingredient

on July 30, 2024

In recent decades, the hemp plant has often been misunderstood and even demonised due to its association with recreational cannabis use. Of course, hemp plants contain very little of the psychoactive compound, THC - the primary cause of the “high” associated with cannabis. But this low-THC cannabis species has many health benefits - benefits that we humans have been taking advantage of for thousands of years.

In this article, we’re exploring how hemp and its derivatives have infiltrated skincare throughout history. We’ll assess the historical uses of this incredible plant, and review the scientific evidence that supports the skincare benefits of hemp.

What is hemp?

Also known as “industrial hemp”, hemp is the name given to cannabis plants that contain only small amounts of THC. The THC limit of hemp varies from country to country. For example, in the UK, the limit is 0.2% THC while in the USA, the limit is 0.3%.

These low-THC plants are types of Cannabis Sativa plants that are now cultivated all over the world. Hemp also happens to be one of the earliest cultivated crops on the planet! Throughout history, we have used hemp for countless applications. Their stalks and fibre were perfect for manufacturing clothing, ship sails, weapons, and even building materials! But their leaves, flowers and seeds were reserved for other purposes.

The therapeutic use of hemp is thought to date back around 5,000 years. It is featured in Ancient Chinese and Indian pharmacopoeias and is mentioned in a number of historical records of Assyrian, Greek, and Egyptian origin.

Some of its therapeutic applications include anaesthesia, the treatment of pain and inflammation, and even mood enhancement. But hemp has also been a common feature in skincare practices throughout much of history.

The skincare benefits of hemp

As we mentioned earlier, the seeds of the hemp plant were reserved for non-industrial uses. In addition to being used as a nutritious food product, hemp seeds nourishing properties have long been employed as a skincare aid. So, what makes hemp such an incredible skincare ingredient?

- Reduces Inflammation

Hemp seed oil contains gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that some studies indicate can help to reduce inflammation. That’s because our body converts this compound into a substance called DGLA, which fights inflammation!

This anti-inflammatory effect could be beneficial for various skin concerns, including acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and skin dryness.

- Promotes Hydration

Speaking of skin dryness, hemp seed oil is a common ingredient in moisturisers - and with good reason! With an impressive selection of unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid, γ-linolenic and α-linolenic acids, hemp seed oil has been found to be incredibly effective at hydrating the skin.

But hemp skincare doesn’t only provide an added boost of moisture. Evidence suggests it may also help the skin to retain that moisture, leaving your skin feeling hydrated for longer!
